Change

On Windows, Herdr can report a pane cwd as F:\github\antonydoyle\recorde while Codex stores the same directory as \\?\F:\Github\antonydoyle\Recorde. The exact SQLite cwd lookup then finds no transcript and the Conversation tab falls back to raw terminal output.

Include the directory's filesystem-resolved spelling in the indexed lookup, while retaining the reported spelling. Peer comparisons verify directory identity on disk before treating differently cased paths as the same directory. A Windows regression test covers the canonical path lookup.

Validation

  • HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/codex.test.ts -t "finds Codex's canonical casing" — passed.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run build, and bun run generate:types --check — passed.
  • Verified against a live Codex pane: the API returned 35 transcript turns instead of scrollback.
  • Attempted bun run test:unit on Windows; unrelated suite tests fail because they require Unix sh, symlink privileges, or POSIX path behavior. No failures in the new regression test.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed Codex conversation lookup on Windows when the working directory’s letter casing or path format differs from the stored path. Directory identity is verified to avoid matching a different pane’s conversation.

Walkthrough

Windows Codex lookup now compares directory identity when path spellings differ and includes the native real path in stored working-directory conditions. A Windows-only test covers case differences and a prefixed stored path.

Windows path matching
server/codex.ts, server/windows-native.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md
Directory comparison checks filesystem identity on Windows when normalized keys differ. Codex pane filtering occurs before directory checks. Stored working-directory conditions include native real-path spellings when available. A Windows-only test checks case differences, a \\?\-prefixed stored path, and a different directory. The changelog records the fix.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to fbf63

Windows Codex lookup now accounts for differing path spellings, and the supplied regression coverage exercises the relevant cases. No actionable merge blocker remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b22c7

The fix preserves existing access and transcript-store checks. However, broader Windows peer matching can cause an owning pane to fall outside the conversation ownership check, potentially allowing another pane's conversation to be attributed incorrectly. The triggering multi-pane scenario has not been demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Broader Windows peer equivalence can displace a previously checked owner from the first-eight peer claim check. With no cached owner binding or explicit resume command, and an incorrect reported session ID, the reported-transcript fallback can return that owner's conversation for another pane. This is a conditional attribution regression, not verified cross-user disclosure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified concern is bounded to transcript attribution among panes checked by the existing resolver and files accepted within the configured Codex store. No new filesystem root, unauthenticated route, or cross-user access is established by this change.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional failure sequence places eight newly equivalent Windows peers before an otherwise recognized owner. The owner then falls outside the capped screen check. If the requested pane reports that owner's thread, the owner has no cached binding, and no peer explicitly resumes that thread, the reported fallback can remain visible. Production occurrence and attacker control of these preconditions are unproven.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing conversation consumers resolve cwd from the selected server-side pane rather than accepting cwd directly from the HTTP request. Rollout validation still requires canonical store containment, a regular .jsonl file, and acceptable transcript metadata.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Open-pane snapshots prune closed-pane bindings, current-pane binding reuse requires matching process identities, and explicit-resume detection checks all matching peers without the eight-peer cap. These are countercontrols, but they do not cover an unbound, non-resume owner omitted from screen checking.

Assert that canonical and reported paths differ.

Without this assertion, the test can pass if realpathSync.native(reported) returns reported. storedCwdCondition then deduplicates the SQL parameters, so the query matches the reported spelling instead of proving that the distinct canonical spelling is used.

     const reported = join(root, "recorde");
     const canonical = realpathSync.native(reported);

Add an assertion in the test setup near `realpathSync.native(reported)` that
`canonical` differs from `reported`, so the test only proceeds when it can
